Isophorone diisocyanate is a clear to pale yellow liquid with a camphor-like smell that is miscible with the majority of common organic solvents but insoluble in water. IPDI is found in both cis and trans conformers. Each conformer is an asymmetrical molecule with similar reactivities, with the secondary isocyanate group being more reactive than the primary isocyanate group. It is not anticipated that IPDI will self-ignite, oxidise, or explode at ambient circumstances because the chemical lacks any groups that could do so. At 23 , there is around mg l-1 of water solubility, and hydrolysis with a half-life of an hour or so results in polymers or the equivalent diamine.
